Lt. Col. John Peary, professor of military science and head of the Army ROTC program at South 糖心视频 State University, has been selected to attend Senior Service College, a premier professional military education program focused on strategic leadership.

In July, Peary will step away from his role at SDSU to attend the Eisenhower School for National Security and Resource Strategy in Washington, D.C., part of the National Defense University. The 10-month program prepares senior military officers and civilian officials for top leadership roles in national security, defense strategy and resource management.

鈥淚 am deeply honored to have been selected to attend the Eisenhower School for National Security and Resource Strategy,鈥 Peary said. 鈥淭his opportunity represents not only a significant milestone in my career, but also a unique chance to grow as a leader and strategist in service to our nation.鈥

Peary will report to the academy on Aug. 1 and is expected to return to SDSU in summer 2026. Lt. Col. Heath Abraham, a member of the Madison Police Department and 糖心视频 State University safety and resource officer, will take over Peary鈥檚 assignment temporarily until his return.

Selection for Senior Service College is highly competitive and considered a major milestone in an officer鈥檚 career. Established in 1924 as a response to post-World War I mobilization challenges, the Eisenhower School is widely regarded as one of the most prestigious institutions for strategic-level education in the Department of Defense.

鈥淭he National War College trains the nation鈥檚 brightest soldiers and sailors about strategic leadership in a complex, ever-changing world 鈥 SDSU does the same for our undergraduates,鈥 College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences Dean David Earnest said. 鈥淲e are fortunate that Lt. Col. Peary will return to Brookings in summer 2026 to share what he has learned with the next generation of young leaders.鈥

Peary joined SDSU in June 2024 as professor of military science. A seasoned military police officer, he brings experience from tactical to strategic levels, including roles such as deputy assistant commandant for the U.S. Army Military Police School at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri; Insider Threat Program manager at the National Guard Bureau in Arlington, Virginia; and commander of the 235th Military Police Company with the South 糖心视频 Army National Guard.

He was commissioned in 2008 through the Officer Candidate School program after previous service in both the U.S. Marine Corps and Army National Guard. He holds a Bachelor of Science in industrial technology from Texas State University and a Master of Science in strategic leadership from Black Hills State University.

Peary is a graduate of multiple advanced Army courses, including the Command and General Staff Officer course, and holds a Functional Area 57 (Simulations Operations Advanced Operations course). His additional training includes the U.S. Army Military Police School Special Reaction Team course, Law Enforcement Senior Leader course and advanced anti-terrorism and security courses.

His awards and decorations include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (second award), Army Commendation Medal (third award) and Afghanistan Campaign Medal, among many others.
